Summer School Preschool Class — Course Details

Two art programs for preschoolers grounded in the theory and practice of painting and 3D art (first and second term)
At GAJYUKU, we treasure each child’s individuality and imagination, and believe that the heart of learning art lies in the discoveries, questions, fun and joy that arise during the creative process. We also hope children will feel the joy of expression — something that goes beyond drawing and making — by sharing with others what happened while they created.
Our teachers are art specialists with their own creative practice. Drawing on that experience, they hold to our policy that the creative process matters most, and nurture each child’s individuality and sensibility.
It is also a great way to support your child’s emotional development and school arts & crafts.
A 3-day intensive summer course
Just as every child’s sensibility is different, so is their pace of making. That’s why GAJYUKU’s Summer School runs as a 3-day continuous curriculum (basics, development, application). Sometimes no discovery comes on day 1. On day 2, a child may discover an idea that leads somewhere new. On day 3, they will feel the joy of giving shape to what they imagined and thought. Taking time to make things brings a real sense of achievement and growth.
Although 3 days is a short time, we hope you will make use of GAJYUKU’s art program in your child’s education.
Class structure
- There are 2 programs: a first term and a second term
- “Preschool Class” (for kindergarten and nursery-school children through early elementary)
- There are 2 courses with different content, so children can study art from both the painting and the 3D side
- Preschool and elementary children are in separate classes; each lesson is 90 minutes (Preschool from 10:00, Elementary from 13:00)
- You can take 1 course or both
First term
“What Can We Make with Dots, Lines and Color?” ☆A first step into drawing☆
For preschoolers: painting and color practice
□ Syllabus
Day 1: “Connecting with Lines” — dot-to-dot drawing —
(join the dots to make a picture)
Day 2: “Color Water” — color water and dropper painting —
(we mix lots of colors and draw with droppers)
Day 3: “Let’s Draw a Map” — group work —
(we all draw 1 big map together)
Aims
Join dots and you get a line. Join lines and you get a shape. In “Connecting with Lines,” children learn the basics of drawing with dots and lines and experience the fun of drawing.
In “Color Water,” children experience how color works using the three primary colors [cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow] and become interested in color. They discover that colors only truly appear in relation to one another.
In “Let’s Draw a Map,” we work on a big sheet of paper, guiding children toward a broad view that keeps both the whole and the parts in mind.
Lesson time
10:00-11:30 (90 minutes)
Schedule
[First term] Bookings open May 10
Seiseki-Sakuragaoka, Youga, Mitaka, Nerima: July 28 (Tue), 29 (Wed), 30 (Thu)

*There is no Summer School at Daita Studio or Toyosu Megumi Studio.
Second term
“Designing with Shape and Color” ☆Let’s be designers☆☆
For preschoolers: design and three-dimensional art practice
□ Syllabus
Day 1: “T-Shirt Design” — drawing an original T-shirt —
(we draw a T-shirt design)
Day 2: “Making a Fancy Turtle” — a turtle in paper clay —
(we decorate the turtle’s shell)
Day 3: “Let’s Make It Together” — a group-made house —
(we all build a cardboard house together)
Aims
Children design the shape and pattern of a familiar T-shirt. From the idea onward, they pay attention to shape and think about how to arrange colors and patterns — a first taste of design.
Using a turtle as the motif, children learn about three-dimensional art. Head, legs, feet… They think as a whole about the color and shape of each part, how to put them together (structure), and how that changes the way it looks — thinking about shape and color in a different way from drawing on a flat surface.
On the final day, building a cardboard house teaches the value of working together, and drawing and making something big lets children experience the scale of space.
Lesson time
10:00-11:30 (90 minutes)
