Summer School Elementary Class — Course Details

Two art programs for elementary and junior high students grounded in the theory and practice of painting and 3D art (first and second term)

At GAJYUKU, we treasure each child’s individuality and imagination, and believe that the heart of learning art lies in the discoveries, questions, fun and joy that arise during the creative process. We also hope children will feel the joy of expression — something that goes beyond drawing and making — by sharing with others what happened while they created.
Our teachers are art specialists with their own creative practice. Drawing on that experience, they hold to our policy that the creative process matters most, and nurture each child’s individuality and sensibility.
It is also a great way to support your child’s emotional development and school arts & crafts.

Painting and 3D art lesson — Summer School Elementary Class

A 3-day intensive summer course

Just as every child’s sensibility is different, so is their pace of making. That’s why GAJYUKU’s Summer School runs as a 3-day continuous curriculum (basics, development, application). Sometimes no discovery comes on day 1. On day 2, a child may discover an idea that leads somewhere new. On day 3, they will feel the joy of giving shape to what they imagined and thought. Taking time to make things brings a real sense of achievement and growth.
Although 3 days is a short time, we hope you will make use of GAJYUKU’s art program in your child’s education.

Class structure

- There are 2 programs: a first term and a second term
- “Elementary & Junior High Class” (for elementary and junior high students)
- There are 2 courses with different content, so children can study art from both the painting and the 3D side
- Preschool and elementary children are in separate classes; each lesson is 90 minutes (Preschool from 10:00, Elementary from 13:00)
- You can take 1 course or both

GAJYUKU Summer School

First term

“A Textured Still Life Like an Oil Painting” ☆Capture texture with the paint surface (matière)☆

For elementary students: painting and texture practice

□ Syllabus

Day 1: “Texture Study” — making samples —
(learn ways of expressing with various materials)
Day 2: “Ground and Underdrawing” — building a textured ground on canvas —
(can you make a texture that matches the motif?)
Day 3: “Coloring” — thinking about hue and value separately —
(adjust color and shape to capture the character of the motif)

Aims

Mixing putty into paint to create thick, oil-paint-like paint, children make samples of various paint surfaces (matière) — bumpy, rough and more — and learn to express texture.
Through a still-life painting, they learn the basics of drawing and coloring: how to hold the pencil, drawing posture, composition, observation, color mixing… Then, using the paint surfaces they explored earlier, they search for ways to express the motif’s qualities more closely.

Lesson time

13:00-14:30 (90 minutes)

Schedule

[First term] Bookings open May 10

Second term

“Let’s Make Animal Figures” ☆3D art thought out from the hexahedron☆

For elementary students: drawing and three-dimensional art practice

□ Syllabus

Day 1: “Drawing Animals” — understanding form through croquis — (observe animal models and draw them from various angles)
Days 2 & 3: “Making Animals” — 3D art in paper clay, then coloring — (observe the animal’s structure and color, and make a realistic miniature)

Aims

Croquis is quick drawing. By sketching from many directions, children build their understanding of an animal’s structure.
In the three-dimensional work, they look at faces pointing up, sideways and down, think about which face of a six-sided solid (hexahedron) each belongs to, and learn how to make accurate forms. Cutting away excess clay and adding more, they learn about the balance of size and weight, and about proportion, through the making process.
Learning the basics of drawing through croquis and three-dimensional art, they deepen their understanding of three-dimensional form.

Lesson time

13:00-14:30 (90 minutes)

Schedule

[Second term] Bookings open around June
